Racing Gallery

Racing was my life, my business and my pleasure. It was awesome to trail ride with some of the best
guys in the area (a couple of whom became famous) even though I couldn't keep up with any of them!
Although I was never a top competitor, I had a blast racing off-road, motocross, slalom and competing in
trials and enduro events. Being the photographer I have few images of myself but I do appear in a few here

The Greenhorn Enduro in 1977 began at John Muir High School in Pasadena, proceeded north
across the mountains, through the desert and on to Greenhorn Mountain near Lake
Isabella. I rode the same Yamaha TT 500 thumper that I used in the Vegas 400.
That's me in the red jacket above left. Right photo is Bob Brooks
working on his bike and Mark Mangold taking care of my bike
Mark came along to keep our bikes running and did a great job, as always. He was also a very talented racer
Lloyd Howell (no relation) in the Z battled me and my 914 more than once in Slalom competitions (and
sometimes on the street; shhhhh!). This one was in the McMahon's Furniture parking lot in Lancaster
I never got to race the Mammoth Mountain Motocross but a lot of my friends did.
For the June 26, 1977 event I flew some friends to the races and enjoyed a wonderful day
Racers are, first row from left, Keith Mertz (Maico); John Lovett (Bultaco) and Dean Taylor
(Montessa). Second row from left, Tom Burgess (Yamaha) and Terry Clark (Kawasaki).
Final shot I took from the pilot's seat of Jim Petrikin profiled against the sunset
near California City on the return flight from Mammoth.
