| Stock Car Program
Bob Telford convinced me to promote car racing by volunteering to handle
the technical aspects of the competition. Prior to the first race, Bob spent many
hours and logged many miles actually driving to the homes or garages of racers
to help them build their cars to conform to our rules. On race day, we needed 12
cars to make a program and with 20 minutes to the first heat, we only had
nine. Fortunately three more showed up just in time and the races were off!
What began as Jalopy races gradually evolved into true Stock Car events,
thanks to enthusiastic racers who stepped up and built more sophisticated
cars that deserved the title. Before I left promoting, we formed the Antelope
Valley Auto Racing Association which eventually took over the events.
