First BMX Races, June 4, 1977

My first BMX race event was held at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds on June 4, 1977
This was before national sanctioning bodies, before gate starts and before every BMX superstar
was driving a Porsche Turbo! It all happened because a group of mothers would not take "No" for
an answer from me when they first approached me about promoting BMX. They persisted and
I'm glad they did; it was great fun for the kids, the parents and for me. Our finish flagger
for this event was the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce President (she's in the red jacket).

Tim (top of hill) and Jim Murphy were among many racers who helped build and maintain the BMX track.
I was fortunate to have lots of volunteers, without whom my company, and the race events, would not
have been possible. In the first row of photos, the flag starter is Bob Telford, who worked tirelessly to
assist with BMX; he also persuaded me to expand into stock car racing.
